Hogan Diver

The Hogan Diver is a mythical creature that lives in outhouses throughout North America.

Various native american tribes used the slang term "hogan" to refer to crap. For example, instead of "I have to take a dump" they might say "I have to drop a hogan".

Early european settlers adopted this slang terminology and "Hogan Diver" stories appeared soon after. Particularly popular in the nineteenth century, the Hogan Diver still makes regular nighttime appearances at campfire ghost stories, Appalachian Trail shelters, and even in those new solar composting toilets up at Mount Rainer.

Pictured here is a Housatonic Hogan Diver (native to northwestern Connecticut) coming up through a toilet seat.
